Banff

51.18°N · 115.57°W

The most photographed mountains in the country. What decides your day is permits, shuttle access and how early you are willing to get up.

A wedding party gathered for a ceremony in a golden Rockies meadow

Banff compresses more landscape into forty minutes of driving than anywhere else in Canada. Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, the Vermilion Lakes, Two Jack, Emerald Lake over in Yoho, and the Bow Valley Parkway connecting most of it. Glacial rock flour turns that water a colour no editing produces, and the mountains sit close enough to fill the frame behind two people standing still.

It is also the busiest national park in the country, and that is the real planning problem. Moraine Lake is shuttle access only. Lake Louise has a good hour before the coaches and a difficult six after. A ceremony on Parks Canada land needs a permit that is slow, seasonal and capped by site. None of that is a reason to go elsewhere; all of it is a reason to plan properly.

How I work here

The most photographed mountains in Canada, and the paperwork nobody mentions

Everything you have seen of the Rockies sits inside forty minutes of driving. What decides whether your day works is permits, shuttles, and what time you are willing to get up.

The permit is handled, not hoped about

A ceremony on Parks Canada land needs a site-specific permit, and the process is slow and capped. It is the single most common reason a Rockies plan collapses in the final month. I need your site months out and I do the paperwork rather than leaving it in your inbox.

I plan around the shuttle, not against it

Moraine Lake cannot be reached by private vehicle. For two people that is a sunrise trip worth making. For a wedding party of twelve it is a fight. I will tell you which of those you are before you build a day around a photograph you saw online.

The good hour is early, and I will say so

Lake Louise before the coaches is a different lake from Lake Louise at eleven. If the frame you want is the empty one, the answer is a sunrise session the morning after the wedding, not a mid-afternoon slot squeezed between family photos.

Banff is the easiest landscape in Canada to photograph and one of the harder places to run a wedding in, and both facts have the same cause: everybody else wants to be there too. Moraine Lake is shuttle access only, private vehicles are not getting you or your guests to that shoreline, and the good hour at Lake Louise is the one before the coaches arrive. A photographer who has not worked there finds this out on your morning.

A ceremony on Parks Canada land needs a permit, and the process is slow, seasonal and capped by site. It is the single most common reason a Rockies plan falls apart in the final month. I arrange it rather than hoping nobody asks, which means I need your site months out rather than weeks.

What you get in return is scale nothing else in the country matches. Glacier-fed water that reads turquoise without a slider being moved, larches turning gold for two weeks in late September, and mountains close enough to fill the frame behind two people standing still. Put a wedding party in front of them and they do not get any smaller.

    Fairmont Banff Springs

    Banff townsite

The castle in the valley. Carries its own permissions, has interiors for any weather, and photographs like nowhere else in the country after dark.

  2. 02

    Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

    Lake Louise

That water, from the lawn. The most recognisable view in Canada and the busiest, so the ceremony hour matters more than the room does.

  3. 03

    The Rimrock Resort

    Sulphur Mountain

Above the town, looking down the valley. The best sunset terrace in Banff and a genuinely dark room for the reception.

  4. 04

    Buffalo Mountain Lodge

    Tunnel Mountain

Timber, stone and fireplaces. Smaller, warmer, and the one I recommend for a wedding under sixty people.

  5. 05

    Emerald Lake Lodge

    Yoho, 40 minutes west

Over the BC line and worth the drive. An island lodge on green water with no through traffic at all.

  6. 06

Moraine Lake and the Vermilion Lakes

    Banff National Park

Portrait ground rather than venues. Moraine is shuttle only; the Vermilion Lakes are five minutes from town and criminally underused.

The calendar

When to get married in Banff

A short alpine season, one spectacular fortnight, and a winter worth considering.

June to August

Long and high

The full season. Everything is open, everything is busy, and hotel rates north of C$450 a night are normal in July.

Late September

Gold and low

Larch season, and about two weeks of it. The alpine turns gold, the crowds thin, and the light is usable all afternoon. The best fortnight in the Rockies.

October to April

Blue and short

Snow, frozen lakes and a completely different park. Access narrows, some roads close, and the photographs are extraordinary.

May

Brown and between

The one month I would talk you out of. The snow has gone, the green has not arrived, and the lakes are still thawing.

The shape of it

How the day runs

A mountain wedding day, built around the light and the access rather than a venue clock.

  1. Hour 1–2

    Getting ready

Usually in the hotel, and usually with a mountain through the window doing half the work for free.

  2. Hour 3

    First look, or the drive

If the ceremony is out at a lake, this hour is transport. Counted honestly, including the parking situation.

  3. Hour 4

    Ceremony

Permit in hand where the site needs one. Guests seated, and the mountains doing what mountains do.

  4. Hour 5

    Family formals

Capped at twelve groups. Altitude, wind and cold make this quick if it is organised and miserable if it is not.

  5. Hour 6

    Portraits

Twenty minutes at water we chose for that hour, not for its reputation.

  6. Hour 7–8

    Dinner and the night

Speeches and dancing. If the sky is clear I will steal you for four minutes after dark, because the stars here are worth it.

Whole days

Complete albums, not highlight reels

Every wedding comes back as one continuous roll. These open on the first frame and run to the last, including the quiet parts a portfolio leaves out. It is the only honest way to judge whether someone can carry a whole day.

All the albums, or the five style albums in the portfolio.

What it costs

What a Banff wedding costs

The same as everywhere else. A collection carries one national price, because the photography is the same work wherever it happens. Sales tax goes on top, so do any add-ons you choose, and travel stays separate only when the wedding requires its own trip.

Questions

Banff, specifically

What does a Banff wedding cost to photograph?

The photography is published and it is the same as everywhere: C$3,000 for Signature, C$4,200 for Legacy and C$5,900 for Photo + Film. Travel is kept to the route the date actually requires and reduced or waived when regional dates can be grouped.

Do we really need a permit?

For a ceremony on Parks Canada land, yes, and it is not a formality. Sites are capped, seasons are limited and the paperwork is slow. Arrange it early, or choose a private venue that carries its own permissions, such as the Springs or Emerald Lake Lodge.

Is Moraine Lake still worth it with the shuttle?

For two people and a photographer, absolutely. For a wedding party of twelve it is a logistical fight you will not enjoy. The honest answer for most weddings is a private venue for the ceremony and a sunrise trip to Moraine the next morning with just the two of you.
